Twelve things you can do for drop: today or any day!

This July, while in the midst of recovering from a colossal case of drop after presenting at the Boundless Retreat, I assigned myself a bit of homework. Could I distill everything I've studied about the phenomenon of drop from my half-decade of classes on the topic into one quick actionable set of strategies?

I could, and I did! The twelve tips below circulated widely after I shared them online. If you're having drop today, you might want to take a peek. If not, bookmark this for the next time you're in drop -- perhaps next Monday after Folsom Street Fair!

Want to go deeper? My full class on Dealing with Drop is part of this year's Kink Bundle, which also includes over $2,000 in other educational resources in kink for only $99 for the whole set. You can check it all out and get yours here!

Now, let's look at

A dozen things you could do for drop, today!

This list brought to you by Miriam Green who is side-eyeing the drop saddling up to their own righthand side, but who thankfully teaches whole classes just on why drop happens and what to do about it.

  1. First things first, repeat after me: Drop is a neurochemical response. I didn't "do anything to deserve this" except for having a peak experience. The only reliable way to ensure you never have drop is to generally stay in the boring zone, and who wants that?
  2. Triage your schedule. Does it really, truly need to get done today? Do it first and get it over with. Can it happen later? Good, do that.
  3. Think you want to have a Big Discussion? Not today, my friend. When we're in drop, we're facing an imbalance of dopamine (motivation), oxytocin (connection), serotonin (self-esteem), and endorphins (endurance). None of this bodes well for processing. That scene or interaction you really want to process with someone else? Schedule it. For maybe five days from now.
  4. Hydrate. Our bodies are big meat sacks made mostly of water. Hydration is critical to the rest-and-digest systems that will help you bounce back. Without overdoing it, drink maybe one-and-a-half times as much water as you think you need. If you've sweated a lot from play or a kink campout, electrolytes are your friends.
  5. Eat healthy meals, and maybe some extra calories. The gut plays a critical role in rebuilding our natural balance of hormones and neurotransmitters, and getting your DOSE neurotransmitters back to baseline is exactly what you need right now.
  6. Get a little bit of sunlight. It's likely that in addition to everything else, you were up late or didn't get enough sleep. Sunlight has a strong role in producing Vitamin D and improving mood, but also helps us reset our circadian rhythms.
  7. Stretch. Among more serious benefits, it feels good and gets your soul a little bit back in your body.
  8. Take a nap. Just a 26 minute or so power nap; don't overdo it or you can feel groggy which makes it all worse. Recently, I've discovered yoga nidra, which is also called non-sleep deep rest. As someone who is not great at napping, I find this practice deeply restorative. You can find recorded yoga nidra sessions on your favorite mindfulness app.
  9. Speaking of which, keep up your mindfulness practices. If you have a regular meditation, journaling, or other self-care practice, today is not the day to skip it. Which might slightly suck, because today is probably the day you want to skip it.
  10. Cut yourself some slack. Everything might feel twice as hard today. You might feel more prone to sluggishness, sadness, longing, detachment, irritation, or other emotions that don't feel great. Let those emotions be present, without letting them take the drivers seat. We can acknowledge what we're feeling without suppressing it but also without giving into it.
  11. Be your own best authority. You know some practices that work for you that aren't on my list. Use them! A hot bath, a favorite tea, a bit of hair of the dog in the form of your lover or toy. Honor your inner wisdom.
  12. Remember: this too shall pass. Drop typically lasts 24-72 hours after onset. Put on some good music, be nice to yourself, and know that this isn't going to last forever. You'll be back to great memories and hot feelings soon. Promise.

If you want more tips and tricks, we offer a whole class on Dealing with Drop, and you can even get it as a digital download as part of this year's Kink Bundle! But maybe wait till you're not actively in drop to watch it. Who needs to try to learn about neurotransmitters while you're already in drop?!?

This post brought to you by the human fingers of Miriam Green, who was experiencing the onset of drop as they wrote this. No, you don't outgrow this stuff, either. Sorry.

No AI was employed in the course of this writing, because why would you want that instead of human opinions forged in the fires of thirty years of experience?

Warmly

Mir

When I was a baby submissive back in the early 2000s, I was eager to learn. I'd read a few books about BDSM over the previous decade, and as I entered my first serious D/s dynamic, I was starving for more. Unfortunately, I did something pretty stupid. Because I was in an ongoing dynamic (with, it turned out, an extremely inexperienced dominant), I let my dominant guide not just our relationship but my education. I read the books she wanted me to read, and she forbade me from reading others. I...
