This Week with Wicked Grounds (5/21 - 5/31)

Howdy kinksters - “You can’t go home again.” “You can’t cross the same river twice.” “I am not who I was.” I’m thinking a lot this week about erotic evolution – the evolution of communities, the evolution of my thinking over time, the changing landscape of my own erotic roadmap as I start adopting new kinds of play. I feel generally fearless about sex and kink these days, but I definitely didn’t start out this way! When I was in my twenties and lived in a college town in Arizona, my polycule used to host an ongoing coffeehouse which was full of local artists, geeks, pagans, polyamorous folks, and people who just thought our DJ played great music. I was partnered with about six people at the time and was focused on healing my own trauma and building sex-positivity. I read voraciously: Annie Sprinkle, Susie Bright, the earliest books of Carol Queen. I had some toys and was experimenting with kinky play, and had started exploring the local nudist scene. But I was still scared to death to explore BDSM classes or the public kink scene. Two of the folks who regularly came to our coffeehouse were a sweet polyamorous couple who were members of Arizona Power Exchange, a lifestyle club in neighboring Phoenix. Every month, they invited us to be their guests at a play party, and they were kind and gentle in explaining what one was. I think some other members of my polycule went, but I didn’t. At that time, I was terrified of going to a play party. (I know, I know!) It took me several more years before I was brave enough to get involved in the Austin and Houston scenes. If you’ve attended my 101 classes, you’ve probably heard me say: If I had one thing to do over, I’d have gotten involved in the public kink scene sooner. The scene has improved my safety, my courage, and my ability to reclaim my own erotic authenticity. So: guess who I’m teaching for next weekend? Yep, that’s the good folks of Arizona Power Exchange (as well as Desert Dominion in Tucson). I’m especially looking forward to facilitating my Kink Self-Exploration Deep Dive on Sunday 5/31 – it will be particularly resonant to explain my early fear in the room where it (should have) happened.
