This Week at Wicked Grounds (6/26 - 7/6)

Hello kinksters - I had a strange and interesting experience last week, tabling for Wicked Grounds at the first ever Mendocino County Pride in coastal Fort Bragg, California. The parade and festival was lovely, with a huge turnout (hundreds of people in a fairly small town), great music, heartfelt speeches, and so much resilience. I tabled among a mostly vanilla crowd, and allowed the folks who recognized our Leather Pride Flag branding to come to me. More than two-dozen times over the course of the afternoon, someone would come up and – usually pretty quietly – say, “I thought I was the only kinky person in Mendocino county.” After a little bit, it broke my heart. I’ll be writing more about this for my own newsletter on Substack soon. That’s the value of Pride. Many of you know that I grew up queer and poly (and down-low kinky) in rural Arizona during the Reagan/ Bush years. The choice to be closeted, or not, was very real and consequential. I was truly terrified to go to my first ever Pride in Phoenix. Being “out” is a privilege, and not all of us can do it. Right now, Wicked Grounds will keep making safe spaces for kinksters wherever we can. Perhaps one of the best things about being largely online these days is that we can reach folks almost anywhere.
